What is Dental Erosion?
Dental erosion is the gradual loss of tooth enamel caused by acid. Enamel is the hard outer layer that protects the sensitive dentine underneath. When enamel wears away, dentine becomes exposed which can lead to pain and sensitivity.
What Causes Erosion?
Diet: Frequent exposure to acidic food and drinks
Medical Conditions: Gastric reflux, vomiting, bulimia, hiatus hernia
Medications: Chewable vitamin C, aspirin, some iron tablets
How to Reduce the Risk
Limit acidic food and drinks (e.g. fizzy drinks, fruit juices) to mealtimes
Avoid acidic products last thing at night
Drink quickly don’t hold or swish liquids around your mouth
Use a straw to reduce contact with teeth
Wait one hour before brushing after vomiting or consuming acidic food/drink
Chew sugar-free gum after meals to stimulate saliva
Brush twice daily with a small-headed brush (medium to soft bristles) and fluoride toothpaste containing 1450ppm fluoride
