Caring for your teeth and gums
Maintaining good oral health is a shared responsibility. By following the advice below, you can help keep your teeth and gums in a healthy condition between dental visits.
Brushing: Brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day once before bed and once at another time. Use a small-headed toothbrush, manual or electric, and replace it at least every three months.
Children’s Brushing: Children under 8 years old should be supervised while brushing. They should never be allowed to lick or eat toothpaste directly from the tube.
Toothpaste: Use a toothpaste containing 1,350–1,500ppm fluoride (check the packaging). A pea-sized amount is sufficient.
After Brushing: Do not rinse after brushing. Spit out the excess toothpaste instead. If you use mouthwash, do so at a separate time for example, after a meal.
Cleaning Between Teeth: Toothbrushes can’t reach between teeth, so use floss or interdental brushes daily.
Lifestyle Choices: Avoid smoking or using smokeless tobacco, as both harm your gums and increase the risk of mouth cancer. If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation.
Diet: Eat a balanced diet with at least five portions of fruit and vegetables daily. Limit sugary foods and drinks to mealtimes only, and avoid having them more than four times a day.
Children’s Medicines: If your child needs medication, ask your pharmacist or GP for a sugar-free version.
Extra Support: If your dentist has concerns about your oral health, they may recommend more frequent visits, prescribe high-fluoride toothpaste, and ask you to keep a food diary.
